The Art of Living Dangerously grew out of a learning programme designed and delivered by Fleet Collective, inspired by MMM’s final provocation and supported by The Foyle Foundation and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
We spent the best part of a year investigating and reflecting on a range of issues that we felt could help us learn The Art of Living Dangerously and concluded that one of the most important of these was to find new ways to understand and express the often hidden value of what creative people do.
Note – our value is different from our values, which shape our beliefs about what is desirable, important or worthy of striving for in our lives. Our value is the importance, worth, or usefulness of what we do for others and for ourselves.
In order to get better at telling the story about the different kinds of value we create, we began to invent a new tool which we called the Alternative Balance Sheet. It is an experiment, still in ‘beta’ form, which offers a new way of telling a much more holistic story about what other value we create besides money, such as spiritual and social, and how these other forms of value could be better recognised and grown.
In this part of the site we’ve curated a set of resources to help you think through key issues relating to how you tell this more holistic story. You can then use the Alternative Balance Sheet canvas to capture the different kinds of value you create for yourself and for others in a new way.
We’re also planning peer designed and led events to help you get better at expressing your value. These will be aimed at:
- generating new ways of looking at a challenge or question and
- developing new approaches for responding to the challenge or question
They will be delivered through partnerships with existing organisations and networks and we’ll keep you posted as to when we can start them and where via the Share Your Experience section.
In the meantime, use the icons below to navigate through the material we’ve curated for this section and use the reflective journaling tool to help you keep track of your responses to them.
